Description
This peg literacy resource is aimed at pupils in middle and senior classes or SEN pupils working on an animals theme. The focus is on similes which mention animals/birds. The pack contains 36 cards – on the left hand side of each card is the beginning of the simile and on the right are the names of three possible animals which complete the simile. The pupil has to use a clothes peg to identify the correct animal on the right hand side.
A list of answers is included. The pupil could initially refer to the answers to complete the task, working towards completing the activity without reference to the answer sheets.
Cut up the sheets into 36 separate cards and laminate the cards. This pack could be an ideal activity for a literacy station. A pack of six sets could be put together, one for each pupil in the group, to be completed at a literacy station.
This activity is especially suitable for pupils who may not be able to write answers but who can read and comprehend and know about similes, therefore it is a way for them to demonstrate this understanding. It is also good for fine motor skills in the manipulation of the pegs onto the cards.
This pack could be split into two separate packs.
We frequently gave activities such as this for homework to our SEN pupils. It gave them the sense that they had homework like everyone else and it also allowed the parents to see what language topic we were currently working on.
This activity would also work well as an independent task to be completed by the pupil in their work station.
