Description

This resource focuses on ordinal numbers and positional language, which can pose some difficulties for younger pupils and SEN pupils. The resource requires pupils to match the ordinal number word with the ordinal number sign. It focuses on the ordinal numbers 1st – 20th.

Cut up the sheets into twenty separate cards and laminate each of the cards individually.

Pupils should read the ordinal number word on the top of each card, if they are able, and then place a clothes peg on the corresponding ordinal number at the bottom of the card. Alternatively, the teacher/SNA/supporting adult could read the ordinal number word and ask the pupil to place the clothes peg on the correct answer at the bottom of the card.

This activity is especially suitable for pupils who may not be able to write answers but is able to match ordinal numbers with the ordinal number words. It is a way for them to demonstrate this knowledge. It is also good for fine motor skills in the manipulation of the pegs onto the cards.

We frequently gave activities such as this for homework to our SEN pupils. It gave them the sense that they had homework like everyone else and it also allowed the parents to see what Maths topic we were currently working on.

Activities such as these were also used as Independent work completed by SEN pupils in their work station.
